India vs Bangladesh: Homeboy Ashwin to the rescue after top-order wobble

Team India were in a spot of bother at 94/7, but Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav steadied the ship with a crucial 92-run stand

India were in a spot of bother at 94/7, but Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav steadied the ship with a crucial 92-run stand to help the hosts recover from a top-order collapse on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong on Wednesday.

Ashwin, who was playing his first Test in India since 2017, scored a gritty 58 while Yadav contributed with an unbeaten 40 as India finished the day on 186/7.

Earlier, India lost their top-order cheaply with Umesh Yadav (14), Shubman Gill (20) and Cheteshwar Pujara (24) all falling to Taijul Islam (3/30).

Virat Kohli (1) and Shreyas Iyer (8) also failed to make any significant contribution, but Ashwin and Yadav came to India's rescue with a counter-attacking partnership.

Ashwin, in particular, was impressive as he played some delightful strokes to keep the scoreboard ticking. He hit seven fours and a six during his knock.

Yadav, on the other hand, played the perfect foil to Ashwin, providing him with good support from the other end.

The duo's partnership helped India recover from the early setbacks and put them in a decent position at the end of the day's play.

Bangladesh will be disappointed with not being able to wrap up the Indian innings, but they will be happy with the overall performance of their bowlers.

Taijul was the pick of the bowlers, but Khaled Ahmed (2/32) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (2/47) also bowled well.

The second day's play will be crucial for both teams as India will look to build on their recovery while Bangladesh will aim to make further inroads into the Indian batting line-up.
